Protected as a Site of Special Scientific Interest it is one of the best examples of its kind in Scotland. The loch is home to rare wetland plants and water beetles, and a good variety of water birds. It is also one of the best sites in Seven Lochs for otter.</pin>

This wetland wilderness is home to carnivorous sundew plants, fluffy bog cotton, and fast flying dragonflies.</pin>
   <pin title="Monkland Canal" x="3333.7413825467" y="1465.9150691257" latitude="55.8648784" longitude="-4.0492344" image="" QRcode="" QRcodeURL="">A feat of Georgian engineering, the Monkland canal was built in the 18th century and served as a busy transport route between Glasgow and the industrial areas of North Lanarkshire. The sections that survive today have been designated a nationally important Scheduled Monument. Mute swan, tufted duck and kingfisher are some of the wildlife you might encounter on a walk or cycle along the towpath.</pin>

In summer the loch has a fantastic display of water lilies. On the north shore of the Loch the Tea House on the Loch is a dog friendly cafe with a cozy wood burning stove in winter and alfresco area overlooking the loch in summer.</pin>
   <pin title="Gartcosh Local Nature Reserve" x="2078.0879293003" y="-1455.6394581891" latitude="55.8914861" longitude="-4.0697479" image="https://www.sevenlochs.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Gartcosh-LNR.jpg" QRcode="" QRcodeURL="">When Gartcosh Steel Works closed a population of great crested newt was discovered in ponds at the old steelworks site. Gartcosh Local Nature Reserve was created to provide a home for these rare amphibians – and the reserve now supports Scotland’s largest population of this protected species. It also provides important habitat for other amphibians, water vole, dragonflies and wetland plants.</pin>
   <pin title="Garnkirk Moss" x="491.49066050204" y="-990.55497094091" latitude="55.8872504" longitude="-4.095668" image="" QRcode="" QRcodeURL="">Garnkirk Moss is the largest area of peatland in the Seven Lochs. Old photos show that this area was once used to supply peat for industry. Although this has left the peatland in poor condition you can still find peatland plants – such as the insect-eating sundew – and the atmospheric mix of birch woodland, heathland and wetland makes this one of the wilder parts of the park.</pin>

The route is mostly traffic free, family-friendly, and links the Forth and Clyde Canal at Kirkintilloch to Strathblane village.</pin>

Completed in 1896 as the ‘City of Glasgow District Asylum for Pauper Lunatics’. Set in extensive grounds the imposing Victorian hospital was in use for 100 years.
